Funders Online Directory FAQs

What is the purpose of the Funders Online directory?
To facilitate the research of independent funder information available on the Internet. Funders Online can be described as a catalogue of funder websites and areas of activity.

What types of organisations are included in the Funders Online directory?

Foundations (grantmaking, operational, community) and corporate funders based or active in Europe, with a web presence. A Japanese foundation, for example, could be registered with Funders Online if it has European programmes or interests.

Grant-seeking organisations are in general not eligible for inclusion. Exception is made for certain types of fund-raising foundations, such as community foundations, that distribute financial resources in the form of grants to organisations or individuals in their community.

Can a small foundation working at national or local level only register with Funders Online?

Yes - provided that this foundation has a website.

How many funders are registered with Funders Online?

Currently, approximately 450 independent funders are included in Funders Online.

Why is my organisation's website not included in the Funders Online directory?

A foundation might not be included in the Funders Online directory for one of the following reasons:
  • we may not know of the existence of your foundation
  • your foundation does not have a website yet - or we are not aware of it
  • your foundation might not be eligible for inclusion even if it is a registered foundation under your country's legislation. Check the eligibility criteria.

What type of information does a funder record or profile hold?
By default, each profile holds the funder's name, website address and country of principal office.

When updated, the profile indicates what types of information are available on the funder's website and provides, wherever possible, direct links to the specific web pages holding this information. Funders also have the option to provide additional comments for each feature.

For more details, see the Funders Online Website Features reference document.

How do I search with Funders Online?
Funders Online is a database that allows you search for independent funders with a web presence by name, country of principal office, funder website features, subject, geographic and population areas of interest, and types of support provided.

Free text or keyword search is not available at this stage. Except for the funder name field, you need to select from the sets of categories provided by Funders Online for your search. For further details, check Search Help.

What is the Funders Online model template?
It is a FREE template that is available to foundations and corporate funders who wish to establish and maintain a simple and low-cost web presence. The template is based on standard Hyper Text Markup Language (HTML) and it contains embedded instructions on how to use and customise it. Funders Online currently offers the template in two different styles.

How can I get the model template?
The model templates are available for downloading at the following address: http://www.fundersonline.org/webtoolkit/template_styles.html
